Massachusetts’ education system is renowned for its stellar curriculums, safety, and graduation rates, but many students’ opportunities are still shaped by zip code. Under-resourced districts often struggle to offer specialized or advanced courses, and well-resourced districts may lack culturally relevant content. Campus Without Walls eliminates these problems by offering high-quality, rigorous, credit-bearing coursework provided by educators and teachers from districts throughout the Commonwealth. To explain how this innovative system works, we invited Ayele Shakur, executive director of Campus Without Walls, to discuss the origins of the program, what goes into the process, and how students have taken to it.
