Description
Have you ever been asked the question, “When will I actually use math in real life?” Look no further— this course is designed to equip students with mathematical skills essential for navigating real-world scenarios. This course seamlessly integrates number sense with practical unit pricing and scale drawings. Students will engage in hands-on experiences that reinforce learning, including the practical application of scaling up and down to create exact copies. We also utilize scaling to calculate unit pricing and/or determine better pricing.
As part of our commitment to fostering well-rounded skills, we’ve partnered with the Boston Debate League. Explore debate-inspired activities that not only encourage student-to-student discourse but also enhance critical thinking skills. Our approach goes beyond theoretical concepts; we present real-life scenarios where the application of positive and negative numbers is critical and equations are the cornerstone of high level math functionality.
No more questioning the relevance of math —witness its practical application unfold seamlessly as your students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-life proficiency.
State Standards
7.RP.A.1
Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction 1/2/1/4 miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.
7.G.A.1
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale
